Nose Reshaping

THE THICKNESS OF THE SKIN IS A MAJOR FACTOR IN THE RESULT OF NOSE RESHAPING AND A THICK SKIN MAY REDUCE THE EFFECTIVENESS OF ANY NASAL REDUCTION AND GIVE MEDIOCRE RESULTS. IT IS THEREFORE IMPORTANT THAT YOU BEAR IN MIND THAT IF YOU HAVE A THICK SKIN IT WILL BE VERY DIFFICULT TO ACHIEVE A FINE NOSE. TO GET THIS RESULT AUGMENTATION RHINOPLASTY WILL HAVE TO BE CARRIED OUT, THIS INVOLVES BUILDING UP THE NASAL BONE USING BONE OR TISSUE GRAFTING.

A surgical procedure can correct or improve a big nose, an aqualine nose, an asymmetrical nose, a pronounced bridge or a bulbous nose.

This procedure is called Rhinoplasty and involves the remodelling or correction of a persons nose to give them an improved appearance or one that better suits their features. There are many types of Rhinoplasty and they will all use one of these techniques

CLOSED RHINOPLASTY: Requires an incision inside the nose to access different parts of the nose. No visible scar.

OPEN RHINOPLASTY: By creating an incision across the columella ( between the nostrils ) the doctor can lift the skin off the tip of the nose and shape the cartilage very precisely.

Depending on the patient, the doctor will decide on which technique for the best result. Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure which is normally done on young people. When someone decides to undergo corrective nose surgery, they should know all the details of the procedure, the advantages and possible complications, the clinic where the procedure will be performed and post operative care.

CANDIDATES

The Rhinoplasty procedure can be performed on any adult who is dissatisfied with the appearance of their nose and wishes to improve the proportions of their facial features. The ideal patient is a young, physically and mentally healthy man or woman, although from the age of 40 onwards this type of procedure rejuvenates the face. In general the results of this procedure are very satisfactory but due to the different characteristics of each patient each case must be studied individually, the aims, the technique and the therapy.

Some people don´t undergo the nose correction procedure for aesthetic reasons but for reconstructive or post trauma reasons. A deviated septum, with or without obstruction of airflow, which can occur after a serious trauma is uncomfortable and can affect a persons life. Thanks to plastic surgery, these post traumatic abnormalities can be corrected, improving the appearance and working of the organ.

Both asthetic and reconstructive Rhinoplasty are procedures which, with a skilled plastic surgeon, can offer correction or improvement of most nasal abnormalities or post traumatic conditions.

THE SURGERY

The procedure can include different surgical manoeuvres, such as filing of the nasal bone, fracturing of nasal bones to narrow the width, reduction of nostrils, lifting and defining of nasal tip, correction of nasal septum ( Septoplasty ) to improve the nasal passage or obtain cartilage.

For each patient, the type of surgery specific to their needs will be determined by the doctor and the patient so as to make sure that the patient understands very clearly what is involved.

OPEN OR CLOSED RHINOPLASTY

The decision to perform an open or closed Rhinoplasty depends on the type of nose, always taking into account the opinion of the patient. Open Rhinoplasty is performed through an incision across the columella and leaves a very small scar that will fade. The closed Rhinoplasty is performed through incisions inside the nose and leaves no visible scars. In each particular case the best option will be evaluated in order to obtain the best results. In some cases the nostrils will need to be reduced and this process involves some additional external incisions independent of the open or closed technique but these incisions are hidden in the creases of the nose.

RISKS

Rhinoplasty, as with all surgical procedures, carries with it the risk of possible complications. Even though these complications are very infrequent, the patient should know and understand what they are and accept these risks by signing a form of consent, a written document from the doctor in which the procedure is explained as are the risks which can occur as a result of the procedure.

The risks that accompany Rhinoplasty are similair to the risks of any surgical procedure: bleeding, infection, scarring and anaesthetic problems. As well as these there are risks that accompany this particular surgery: unsatisfactory result ( slight asymmetry, deviation or cartilage protrusions ), change in respiratory function ( problems with passage of air ), scar tissue.

With plastic surgery, the existing nose is being remodelled but a new nose is not being made. In the cases when the result is not satisfactory, which will be in 5 to 10% of cases, small retouches can be done to get the desired result.

TYPE OF ANAESTHETIC

In nasal procedures general anaesthetic is used and this ensures that the patient is asleep and totally relaxed, with no pain and enabling the surgical team to control the air passages, of utmost importance in the carrying out of this procedure.

It is very rare that anaesthetic complications occur but these can include allergic reactions, postoperative nausea or vomitting and localised pain during administration of local anaesthetic. Current anaesthesia methods and pharmaceuticals minimize any chances of complications.

POSTOPERATIVE CARE

This procedure does not ususally result in postoperative pain but in a feeling of nasal congestion. After the operation a splint and nasal packing will be placed in the nose, thepacking will be removed after 1-3 days. Painkillers, anti inflammatories and antibiotics will be administered according to your doctors instructions. During the first days after surgery the nose and adjacent areas will be inflamed and show bruising but these symptoms will disappear over the following days. The nasal splint will be removed after 7-10 days and special care must be taken to avoid any impact in the nasal area as this could result in serious pain and possible deformation of the nose.

It´s also important to avoid sun exposure which can cause pigmentation of the nasal skin. Soft massaging with moisturizer or anti inflammatory cream can improve lymphatic drainage and nasal washes with serum improve the lubrication of the nostrils and elimination of mucus. Taking care of the nose after the procedure is a very important part of the surgical process.

RESULTS

The results depend on pre operative desires and demands of the patient and surgeon. After a few days the results will be noticeable but it´s not until after the first year that the results will be definitive. Evidently, in the majority of cases the results are excellent and the patient will be very satisfied seeing the aesthetic improvement. The main aim of Rhinoplasty is not to change the face of the patient but to correct a defect and improve the overall look of the face.

ADAPTION OF THE NEW NOSE TO THE FACE

At first the nose will be inflamed, painful and with some bruising and so the result will not be immediately visible. During the healing process the appearance will improve as will the obvious results of the procedure and at the same time the satisfaction of the patient.
